Resistance welding: Lynn Welding provides resistance welding services to many of its customers. Lynn Welding uses SCIAKY welders which are considered the best in the world for maintaining the strictest tolerances required by the aerospace industry. Our SCIAKY welders are capable of welding aluminum, Stainless steel, Titanium, Inconel and most other metals while maintaining the proper conditions to ensure a quality weld. Our resistance welding operations are closely monitored by our internal quality department which ensures that all of the resistance welding functions fall within the guidelines set forth by NADCAP( National Aerospace and Defense Contractors Accreditation Program).
What is Resistance Welding: Resistance welding consists of the joining of two or more pieces of metal by the application of heat, electricity and pressure. Resistance welding embraces that branch of welding art in which the welding heat in the parts to be welded is generated by the resistance offered by these parts to the passage of an electric current. It differs from other forms of welding in that no extraneous materials such as fluxes, filler rods, etc are used; therefore metallography of the weld is not complicated by the addition of these materials. Resistance welding further differs from the fusion welding process, by utilizing the application of mechanical pressure to forge the heated parts together. The effect of the pressure is to refine the grain structure, thus producing a weld with physical properties in most cases equal to the parent material, and sometimes even superior.
Types of resistance welding that we perform:
Spot Welding: is the most widely used form of resistance welding. This type of welding is done with electrodes which are held essentially stationary while the weld is being made. We are NADCAP accredited for the resistance spot welding procedure.
Seam Welding: is the process of making a series of overlapping welds by using two rotating wheel electrodes without opening the electrodes between spots. This type of weld is air and liquid tight. Our NADCAP certification also allows us to perform this resistance seam welding procedure for the aerospace and defense industries.
Stitch Welding: is the process of using the spot weld configuration but overlapping the actual weld nuggets over the length of the 2 pieces of metal being joined. This type of weld can produce the results of a seam weld in an area where two rotating wheel electrodes will not fit.
The Weld Nugget: the weld nugget is the area in the resistance weld that actually joins the two pieces of metal together. The weld nugget is essentially the exact point where the two pieces of metal melted; when under heat and pressure and then cooled to form one piece. Our resistance department has the experience to control the nugget size to our customers specification. Our resistance welding department is one of the most respected in the aviation industry; our experience and understanding of the fundamental laws of resistance welding allows us to maintain tight tolerance control required by the aviation industry.
